One of the destinations I had scouted out prior to our trip to Båstad, Sweden was the nearby peninsula of Kullen and specifically the town of Höganäs. I found some information about a local market, Magasin 36, but not much in English and not really many sites that specifically had information about it. So with this roughly as a destination we planned our day, not sure at all what we would find, but it ended up being my favorite day of our vacation!

Given that both Jeff and Indi prefer outdoor activities to shopping, we first drove out to the end of the Kullen Peninsula. It was a beautiful drive and we stopped in the town of Mölle for some scenic pictures before we got to the Nature Reserve which was our end destination (prior to my shopping, of course!). We both agreed that on another trip to the area we would definitely consider staying in Mölle- it was gorgeous and had restaurants and the all important bakeries along with its proximity to both the Nature Reserve as well as shopping.

The Nature Reserve is at the very tip of the Kullen Peninsula, which is the very pointy one you can see on maps of Sweden in the Southwestern portion, directly south of the peninsula where the more famous Båstad is located. This reserve contains the brightest lighthouse in all of Scandinavia and is home to beautiful cliffs. After driving north from South of Malmo we had seen how flat that part of the country is and were thrilled with the gorgeous cliffs in this area. The park had a booth at the entrance but appeared to be free entry at the time that we went (we were very early in the morning) and we drove through to the end of the peninsula to find a parking lot. It was interesting, there were a lot of golf courses in this area, and even one that looked very nice within the Nature Reserve! There were also some food outlets that were not open that early in the morning but seemed to be quite nice for hikers or people enjoying the park.

Once we located the parking lot nearest the lighthouse there was a large map indicating it was only about .5km walk from where we were. So off we went and sure enough, it was beautiful! You could go into the lighthouse for a small fee but we found the views outside to be plenty for us and I had been promised my shopping time so I encouraged Jeff to skip this portion of the tour…

After exploring the lighthouse area we drove the 20 minutes or so back to Magasin 36 and sure enough it was an awesome market! It is made from an old pottery plant that uses the original chimneys as shop display rooms and the old brick building is just beautiful inside. There were some more expensive and fancier shops than what I was looking for as well as some beautiful handmade textiles and of course the wonderful local pottery – Höganäs Keramik. Sign for Magasin 36

After some small purchases we had some fresh potato salad and snacks from the market area. The first floor houses a local market with everything from locally made cheeses to also things such as Stubbs BBQ Sauce which made me chuckle, I hadn’t seen that since we moved to Europe! There were also amazing fresh pastries which we of course had as well. It was such a neat space I could have just sat there all day, watching the people and looking at the items being put out. We particularly enjoyed the care that one shop keeper was using with rearranging her artichokes multiple times so that they were just right.

After enjoying Magasin 36 we headed across the street to an Outlet Mall! I love a good outlet and this one reminded us very much of home in the US, except with more interesting stores. There was the wonderful Swedish glass outlet, Kosta Boda and Orrefors, as well as our new favorite clothing store, Lager 157 that reminded me so much of an American clothing outlet we had  a great time with a little feeling of home. After all this shopping we had one tired 19 month old on our hands and headed back to the Båstad area without spending any more time in the cute downtown area of Höganäs, but that just gives me an excuse to head back on our next trip! Outlets in Hoganas
